Day trips from Madrid by train: the complete Renfe & Cercanías guide

Cuenca: 55 min AVE from Atocha (€18–25). El Escorial: 1 h Cercanías C-3/C-8 from Atocha (€4–5, Tourist Travel Pass valid). Madrid’s train network is its greatest asset for day-trippers
Spain has the longest high-speed rail network in Europe. Madrid sits at its centre. From the two main stations — Atocha in the south and Chamartín in the north — you can reach UNESCO World Heritage cities, royal monastery complexes, hanging-house gorges, and medieval walls without a car, a hire van, or a tour bus. Most of the best day trips cost less than €30 return.
This guide covers every train-accessible day trip from Madrid, organised by service type and departure station. The goal: pick up this page and know exactly which train to catch, from which station, at what cost, and what to do when you arrive.
Understanding Madrid’s rail system
Three types of trains matter for day trips
AVE / AVANT (high-speed and regional high-speed): Operated by Renfe on dedicated high-speed infrastructure. Fastest option for Toledo (33 min), Segovia (28 min), and Cuenca (55 min). Book in advance at Renfe.com. Tourist Travel Pass NOT valid.
Cercanías (commuter rail): Regional commuter trains, similar to London’s Overground or Paris’s RER. Frequent, cheap, minimal booking required. Tourist Travel Pass valid on most lines within Madrid zones. Good for El Escorial (C-3/C-8), Aranjuez (C-3), and Alcalá de Henares (C-2).
MD / Alvia / Regional (medium-distance and intercity): Regular train services for longer journeys — Ávila (~1.5–2 h), Salamanca (~2.5 h). Bookable via Renfe.com; Tourist Travel Pass NOT valid.
The two main stations
Madrid Puerta de Atocha (Atocha): South of the city centre. Metro Line 1 (Atocha Renfe station). Serves Toledo, Cuenca, Aranjuez (Cercanías C-3), Alcalá de Henares (Cercanías C-2), and Ávila/Salamanca (some services). The main long-distance and high-speed terminal.
Madrid Chamartín-Clara Campoamor (Chamartín): North of the city, beside the Paseo de la Castellana. Metro Lines 1 and 10. Serves Segovia, Ávila (some services), Salamanca, and Alcalá de Henares (Cercanías C-2). Also connected to Atocha by a through-city rail tunnel — some trains start at Atocha, stop at Chamartín, and continue north.
Getting between stations: Cercanías C-3 and C-4 link Atocha, Sol, and Chamartín in about 10–15 minutes. If you’re unsure which station your train departs from, check Renfe.com — it will show the specific departure station.
Day trips by AVANT / AVE (high-speed)
Toledo — AVANT from Atocha, 33 minutes
The fastest and most popular day trip. AVANT trains depart Atocha approximately every 30–60 minutes from around 07:00 to 21:30.
- Fare: €12–16 single, ~€24–32 return
- From Toledo station: Bus 5 to old town (10 min, €1.50) or 25-min walk uphill
- Full guide: Toledo from Madrid
Booking tip: Morning trains (08:00–10:00) sell out on weekends and public holidays. Book 1–2 days ahead in peak season via Renfe.com or the Renfe app.
Segovia — AVE from Chamartín, 28–30 minutes
The fastest train in the network for day trips. Departs from Chamartín — reach it from Sol in 5 minutes by Cercanías.
- Fare: ~€12–14 single, ~€25–28 return
- From Segovia-Guiomar station: Bus 11 to old town (15 min, €1.50) or taxi (~€8)
- Full guide: Segovia from Madrid
Key detail: The station (Segovia-Guiomar) is 5 km from the aqueduct. The bus is reliable; allow 20 minutes from train arrival to being at the aqueduct.
Cuenca — AVE from Atocha, 55 minutes
The AVE to Cuenca-Fernando Zóbel station runs several times daily. The station is modern and 4 km from the old town.

How to book Renfe trains
Renfe.com (or the Renfe app): The official Renfe website allows purchasing tickets in English. Pay by international card. Tickets are electronic (QR code on phone or printout).
At the station: Ticket machines at Atocha and Chamartín have English-language options. Queues can be long at peak times.
Third-party sites: Trainline, Omio, and similar aggregators sell Renfe tickets with a booking fee. Use the Renfe site directly to avoid surcharges.
Cercanías: For commuter rail (Aranjuez, El Escorial, Alcalá), tickets can be bought on the day at station machines with no advance booking needed.
Day trips by bus (no train option)
Two major day trips have no practical train option:
Chinchón: Bus 337 from Conde de Casal metro station, ~50–60 min. See the Chinchón from Madrid guide.
Consuegra windmills: InterBus from Estación Sur, ~2 hours 20 minutes. Limited schedule — plan carefully. See the Consuegra windmills guide.
