Madrid packing essentials

Madrid has a continental climate at 650 m altitude — hot, dry summers (35–38 °C in July–August) and cold, sometimes snowy winters (3–12 °C). The saying "nine months of winter, three of hell" exaggerates, but it captures the swing. The centre is very walkable on hard pavements and the odd cobbled plaza, so comfortable shoes matter. Layers are key year-round because evenings cool down sharply even in summer.

There is no strict dress code, but covering shoulders and knees is expected inside the Almudena Cathedral and the Royal Palace. Sunscreen is necessary from April onwards and essential June–September. Remember meals run late (lunch at 2pm, dinner from 9pm), so a light layer for terrace evenings is useful most of the year.
